Other Character: Jester Lavorre (Critical Role, Campaign 2)

Character Name: Orym of the Air Ashari
Journal: [personal profile] bigmoonlittlemoon
Character's Age: 30ish
Canon: Critical Role (Campaign 3)
Canon Point: Episode 48, after escaping the Feywild + CRAU from Folkmore
Powers:
Orym's magical abilities are pretty limited. He can cast two cantrips:
1. Druidcraft - which allows him to grow plants (and which he uses quite often to make flowers), light a small fire or a few other minor effects (outlined here)
2. Gust - which does what is says on the tin (outlined here)

Orym's sword, which he has with him, also has magical abilities. It can shoot vines and use those to grab and pull enemies. It can also send sharp currents of air outward up to fifteen feet (outlined here)

His boots let him leap higher than normal. Magic boots!

Other than this, Orym is a very skilled fighter, but there's nothing super-human about him. He's just a little guy.

As this is a game set loosely in Regency England, we want to know how your character will adapt to this setting. How might they react to the culture and societal expectations placed upon them as a member of the upper class?:

Orym is used to handling things that are thrown at him. Ever since his husband and father-in-law were killed more than five years ago, he's been something of a wanderer without much of anywhere to call home, so he is very accustomed to adapting to new places.

As a former Tempest Blade, guard to the Voice of the Tempest (the leader of the Air Ashari) he's also used to a level of formality and decorum that his position required. So while it was less societal expectations, Orym is certainly familiar with the fact that there are definite rules in different places. Now, that doesn't mean he always follows said rules these days -- especially if some of those rules strike him as harmful.

I think the hardest adjustment for him will be the fashion. He's not used to anything quite so structured or buttoned up. It will impede his movements with his fighting style, so he'll bristle. He's also not used to the overt formality, but he's exceptionally observant and fairly sharp, so he'll muddle through.

You've been invited to a formal dinner! How charming! Now, how do you plan to conduct yourself in such a space? Remember, appearance is everything!:

Formal dinners really aren't my thing. Don't get me wrong, I've been to a few, and they're fine if that's what you like. It does seem pretty important around here though, so I guess I've got to get my act together, right?

I mean, hopefully someone can give me some advice on what to wear. I'm really not good at that at all. Maybe I can ask Dorian though. Fashion is definitely more his thing. [A thought seems to occur right here.] Maybe we could coordinate.

Anyway, with a little help with the clothes, I can stand up straight and look decent at least. Polite conversation, sure. No problem. But is there a reason there are so many forks? I've only got one mouth.

Is there a cheat sheet for this?

ACTIVE TIMES/PACE: US Eastern time. Most active during evenings and weekends.
BRACKETS/PROSE: Either or are fine
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: Warnings appreciated for extreme violence or gore, talk of sexual assault, suicide

IN CHARACTER

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Absolutely. Orym is a small affectionate thing. Once the CR is there, go for it. He's a hugger.
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Yes please absolutely. Orym is a fighter and familiar with battle, so he can hold his own.
RELATIONSHIPS: If the CR gets there, definitely. That said, Orym is a widow and is a little hesitant to open himself up to romance. It will take some doing. He's canonly only interested in men.
PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: Absolutely up for psychic/telepath things. Orym is used to being around a psychic mind reader. But let's chat first first.
MAGICAL INFORMATION: Orym knows a few cantrips that are little more than party tricks.
MEDICAL INFORMATION: Tougher than he looks. But he's a halfling, ages at slower rate than humans (after reaching adulthood anyway).
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: None come to mind.

OUT OF CHARACTER

BACKTAGGING: Forever and always.
THREADHOPPING: Public network stuff, sure go for it
FOURTHWALLING: I'd prefer not
NOT INTERESTED IN: Nothing comes to mind

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

VISUAL: Orym is a halfling, three foot three. He's slender but made almost entirely of lithe, wiry muscle. His dark brown hair is kept short. His eyes are green and his skin lightly tanned like someone who spends a lot of time outside. He has a full sleeve tattoo on his right arm, depicting swirling winds and air currents and the two moons of Exandria, the smaller red Ruidus cradled in the larger crescent moon of Catha.
AURAL: Orym speaks softly and calmly in general, and rarely raises his voice in anger.
OLFACTORY: Orym smells like fresh air, sun-drenched earth and flowers.
DEMEANOUR: Generally composed and calm, Orym is still friendly. In motion, he is graceful and sure of his body, his fighting style more like dance than anything else.

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills:
Orym is a very skilled fighter, primarily with a short sword and shield. Despite his small size, he is capable of holding his own in battles with much larger opponents. He's very quick and agile, and his fighting style is more like ballet than brute force combat.

Orym is also extremely perceptive, always on the lookout for threats around him and ready to spring to the defense of his friends.

He also has a gift for being the rational voice in a sea of what could kindly be described as chaos.

Canon Abilities:
Orym's only magical abilities are minor cantrips: druidcraft and gust. With druidcraft he usually limits it to growing flowers. Gust generates a small blast of air capable of pushing people and creatures back a short way.

Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: Orym won't initially have any visible animal features, but he will be able to shapeshift into several creatures -- birds and small woodland creatures primarily.

Role Reasoning: Orym does not consider himself a leader, instead feeling more like he fits in a support role. Part of this may be because of his training as a guard as well as his experiences with the Crown Keepers and Bell's Hells. He has traveled with people who tend to be more vocal and confident. He's the one who encouraged Imogen to step up into that sort of role as well. This seems like it resonates with the Familiar role, capable of supporting those who are Legends or Myth. In terms of good and evil, Orym is certainly a good-aligned character, but he is also willing to do things that need to be done. He also has gone along with his more criminally-inclined friends, not wanting to screw anyone over, but willing to go along to at least make sure his friends don't get into too much trouble.

★ Personality ★

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?
The most traumatic moment of Orym's life was the day both his husband (Will) and his father-in-law (whom he had viewed as a father figure for most of his life, even before he'd married Will) were killed by an attack against the Voice of the Tempest. Will and Orym had both trained together and become Tempest Blades, the guards of the Voice of the Tempest. Zephrah was, in general, a relatively peaceful place, so the sudden assassination attempt was very out of the ordinary. Orym had been living a happy life, extremely content with what he had. And then it was violently taken away from him. There's a lingering pain and trauma from that, but it has not made him bitter. He feels a certain level of survivor's guilt, for still being here when two of the people he loved most are gone.

This event turned out to be the catalyst for his journeying beyond Zephrah, for meeting the Crown Keepers and later becoming part of Bell's Hells. If anything, Orym takes looking out for those depending on him even more seriously. He's specifically said that while he misses Will very much, the time they had together was very good, and he wouldn't trade a moment of it, despite how it ended.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?
A few years before his current canon point, the answer to this would be his husband, Will, and his father-in-law, Derrig. Orym's father left and has never had any part in his life. He spent a lot of time growing up with Derrig and his children, including Will who he'd eventually fall in love with and marry. They shaped who he was as a person. His sisters-in-law taught him magic. Derrig trained him in fighting. And they gave him family beyond his mother (who he was also close with).

Since both Will and Derrig were killed, the most important relationships in his current life was the other members of Bell's Hells -- in particular Fearne and Dorian. He is dedicated to his friends and wants to make sure they are all safe and together. Orym is noticeable distressed when Imogen says that she would kill members of their group to protect the rest. He seems much more aligned with Ashton's philosophy of no one being left behind, that they're all in this together. He's always the first to step in front of his friends when there is a threat, to try to protect them. Orym cares about these people and wants them all to find the things they need, even if sometimes delaying his own mission -- though he takes that extremely seriously as well.

  • What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?
Orym definitely has a strong moral code. He's referred to himself as the "peaceful solutions guy" of the group (though he did say this as he stabbed someone in the foot to encourage them to talk, but in his defense it had been a very bad day. This event is slightly ahead of his canon point, but still. This is him.) While several of his good friends are very comfortable with shades of gray and bending the law, Orym is very much against anything that would affect innocent people.

He's also wary of the ability of power and powerful items to corrupt. He makes a point of expressing his displeasure at the idea of Dorian holding onto the Circlet of Barbed Vision, worried about what it would mean for his friend and the danger of him being corrupted by it.

Orym is most often the one who chooses the responsible path if it is available. That said, he is a fighter and will not hesitate to attack in order to protect his friends or vulnerable people. He's also dedicated to his service to the Voice of the Tempest and seems to have a great deal of faith in her.

  • Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind?
Generally, Orym has a great capacity for forgiveness. He's levelheaded and doesn't allow small slights to affect his relationships with other people. After FCG turns against the party briefly, Orym makes sure his friend is back in his right mind won't attack them again. FCG tries to hand his weapons over to Orym, but the halfling makes a point of returning them to the automaton, making sure that FCG knows they are still part of the group.

He's also had brief disagreements/clashes with Dorian and Imogen, but none of this affects his overall friendships with them. If anything, Dorian and Orym seem closer than ever not long after their disagreement over the Circlet.

That said, he will never forgive the ones who attacked Zephrah and took his family from him. He also seems to be holding a grudge against the changeling Yu Suffiad, seemingly due to the fact that Yu tried to manipulate him and hurt his friends.

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?
Orym's safe space was Zephrah for a long time, but it became very clear that it was no longer safe after he lost his husband. Once he started traveling and met the group that would become the Crown Keepers, he started to find a new safe space. By the time that Orym, Fearne and Dorian met up with the other members of Bells Hells, his safe space had become very specifically with these friends. The three of them frequently shared a bed, with Orym tucked in the middle using his friends as something of a hammock. This was a safespace, surrounded by people that he cared about and trusted. Once Dorian left, this was interrupted, but he still has Fearne -- and he still makes a point of checking in with Dorian via the sending stone that each of them hold a part of.

In general, it is not a location that is a safespace for Orym, but the people he is around.

His other safespace is the headspace that he gets into with he's training/practicing with his sword. Going through the various sword forms is essentially a form of meditation for him, when he can clear his mind and focus on the weight of a weapon in his hand, the way his body moves and responds, muscles flexing, tendons stretching. It's one of the best ways he has to clear his mind, and it brings back memories of training with Derrig and Will when he was younger.
